Chests of Legends can be found from the following sources:
- Dug up during the last chapter of an Athena's Fortune Voyage
- Three can be dug up during the last chapter of a Gilded Voyage of Legends
- Inside the Vault of an active Fort of the Damned, accessed with the Fort of the Damned Key.
- Dug up during the last chapter of an Athena's Fortune Emissary Quest
- Very rare chance to be dug up during an Athena's Run of Thieves' Haven
- Inside the Vault of an active Fort of Fortune, accessed with the Fort of Fortune Key.
- Found after defeating the last fort in the Legend of the Veil Voyage

The Chest of Legends can be sold to:
- The Mysterious Stranger at any Tavern for Gold and Athena's Fortune Reputation and Emissary Value (if sailing as an Athena's Fortune Emissary).
- The Servant of the Flame at The Reaper’s Hideout for Gold and Reaper's Bones Reputation and Emissary Value (if sailing as a Reaper's Bones Emissary).

- Picking up and placing this Treasure on a Ship for the first time gives Emissary Grade Reputation to Trading Company Emissaries representing the Athena's Fortune or Reaper's Bones.
- There is an Ashen Chest of Legends, worth 1.5x the regular Chest, which can be uncovered from Ashen Athena's Fortune Voyages.
- The Chest of Legends found inside a Fort of the Damned Vault is claimed by the first Crew to pick it up, counting as stolen when sold by another Crew.
- The Chest of Legends emits a white glint from a distance.
