Factions are a new mechanic introduced in Season Eight of Sea of Thieves. They function similarly to Trading Companies, though their focus is predominantly on player-versus-player (PvP) activities, where their equivalent of Reputation, Allegiance is awarded by sinking ships of the opposing faction.

There are currently two factions players can pledge allegiance to, being the Guardians of Fortune and the Servants of the Flame. The former serving under the Pirate Lord, adjacent to Athena's Fortune. While the latter is commanded by Captain Flameheart of the Reaper's Bones.

Hourglasses of Fate[]

Starting from Season Eight, all ships, captained or otherwise, are equipped with an Hourglass of Fate on their Captain's Tables. In addition, all Athena's and Reaper's Emissary tables have hourglasses added to them. The ship's hourglass can be flipped to represent either the Guardians of Fortune or the Servants of the Flame (though it always defaults to the Guardians of Fortune on spawn), and can subsequently pledge to their chosen faction. Conversely, the hourglasses at the tables cannot be flipped, and cannot be pledged to, instead serving as a means to end their hourglass pledge, not unlike lowering an emissary flag.

Once a player or crew pledges to their chosen faction, their ship is marked on the map exclusively for players of the opposing faction to see. Likewise, pledging officially opts in to on-demand PvP, meaning players of opposing factions can invade, even if they came from other servers. Pledging also adds a War Map to the captain's table, which can be used to invade other players.

Players can also choose to raise an Emissary Flag alongside their pledge. Any Emissary can be used regardless of faction, except for the trading company that represents the opposite faction (i.e. Guardians of Fortune ships cannot raise the Reaper's Bones flag and Servants of the Flame ships cannot raise the Athena's Fortune flag.)

Allegiance[]

Allegiance functions for Factions the same way Reputation does for Trading Companies. Regardless of faction, Allegiance is earned via the following actions:

  • Sinking ships of the opposing faction via any means
  • Being sunk during a PvP match or by opposing faction ships outside of PvP matches
  • Canceling your pledge (sometimes referred to as "lowering your hourglass") at an Outpost (or The Reaper's Hideout, exclusively for Servants of the Flame) after having accrued some Value or after achieving a Stash Grade of 1 or higher.
  • Handing in flags of the opposing faction to the faction leader your are sailing for.

Additionally, getting continuous win streaks, piloting a captained ship, and raising a Grade V Emissary Flag can all increase the overall Allegiance earned from these actions when combined together.

The following actions do NOT give Allegiance:

  • Voting to scuttle your ship
  • Killing players on the opposing faction
  • Sinking ships on the same faction as you outside of a PvP match
  • Sinking ships who haven't pledged to a faction
