The Ferry of the Damned is a ghostly ship where pirates find themselves after dying. After a brief waiting period following death, the door to what would normally be the Captain's Cabin disintegrates, and players can walk through it to respawn.
While there, players appear as translucent ghost versions of themselves, and can interact with other players who have recently died.
All players who have died around the same time and on the same multiplayer server appear on the same Ferry, regardless of where in the world they were, or which crews they were on.
Since the Festival of the Damned update, players are able to collect the Flame of Fate with their lantern if they've died in one of six different ways. The flame in their lantern will be colored according to the method of their demise. That colored flame can then be used to light lanterns on ships (including the rowboat), or any of the twelve torches scattered across the map.
- Blue - Death by Shark
- Green - Death by Skeleton
- Purple - Death by snake venom (including Venom Ball)
- Pink - Death by another player
- Red - Death by fallen volcanic rock (hence only obtainable from the Devil's Roar)
- White - Death by Lightning

Trivia
- The Ferry of the Damned is helmed by the ghost of pirate captain. According to the Sea of Thieves Developers and in-game lore, the captain of the ship is doomed for all eternity to ferry the souls of pirates back to the Realm of the Living.
