Type Stationary item

Journals are readable Stationary Items that can be found hidden all around The Sea of Thieves. These Journals usually uncover lore behind certain characters, artifacts or Ships. Most readable Journals have Commendations tied to locating and reading them.

Credit to D42STRIKER on the Sea of Thieves Forum for compiling most of these journals.

Merrick's Journals

Merrick's Journals were a set of journals added during The Hungering Deep event (and modified shortly), which provided clues to helping the players discover the location and summoning ritual for the first Megalodon. During the event, each one generally had two entries, which would lead the player to an NPC, who in turn would lead the player to the next journal. In total there were three journals in order: XX, V, and I.

Merrick has left behind a journal...
(Available after The Hungering Deep event)

Read Page 26: Disaster!
(Available only during The Hungering Deep event)

Disaster has struck! I played me new shanty with me new crew, inspired by the notes of the old tribes. Even another ship joined in!
But... the beat somehow called to a creature... just like what the tribes worshipped. It was over in moments.
The sea was red before, but much more so after. Me crew were reduced to nothin' but shark bait, along wiv' me legs. The last of us fled.
I've noted the map number, in case I ever get so drunk I forget. The letter needed is one dear to me heart.

Read Page 30: Goin' for a drink!
(Available only during The Hungering Deep event)

I'm goin' for a drink! I'll charm one out of me favourite tavern keeper, with a little romantic verse...
Red haired and fair of face, her tavern stands at a shining place!
A place where captains hang their hats, head there for boozy chats!

Read 'Vengeance at last!'
(Only after The Hungering Deep event)

Well, knock me down wiv a chicken feather, if the pirates of the Sea of Thieves didn't rally round this old drunk when I needed them most.
I had so many people listenin' to me tale, goin' out to battle the Hungering One!
In fact... really quite a LOT of pirates said they killed the beast. In thousands of different, conflictin' ways. Strange times we live in...
I made enough figureheads and drums to fill in the ocean, I reckon!
I appreciate the support, but I need to go away for a while and rest me whittlin' hand.
Besides, I had a bath and I don't think the skellies will leave me alone much longer.
Safe voyages, fellow pirates!

(Only during The Hungering Deep event)

Why do I TorrTure meseff? Comin back to the wreckij of th Killer Whale.
If I could summon the shark again... I could avenge me CRew. An me legses.
I went Too the same spot, but he isn't comin. What's difrent?
Mebbe I'm tooo drunk. Can't harrdly writ. Gonna get a cuppa T, clerr my head.

Read Page 12: A grog from T.
(Only during The Hungering Deep event)

Tea is too.. sobering. Gonna get more grog, from me dear... whassAName. T somehinge. Find herr from my romantic verse:
The tavern that hass a nasty bite, where the drunks sslither evry nighT.
The BARkeep's fond o her ownn grogg, a scarred beaut in a Wild spott.
Rhymin's hard when you canT sea strait.

Read 'One last shanty...'
(Only after The Hungering Deep event)

Before I retire, I wanted to write one last shanty, inspired by some words I heard being bellowed from me speaking trumpets.
This one definitely won't summon any man-eating sea monsters. In fact, I promise not to cause so much trouble ever again:
We're no strangers, to this cove...
You know the pirate code and so do I!
A pile of treasure's what I'm thinking of...
You wouldn't get this from any other pi...rate!
Never gonna brig you up,
Never gonna let you drown,
Never gonna sail around,
And maroon you!
Never gonna steal your eye,
Never gonna not say 'aye'!
Never gonna sell your booty,
For a doubloon!
... it's a work in progress. I think I'll let me fellow pirates fill in the gaps.
My son Derrick seems to think it's hilarious. He suggested the title 'Merrick Rolled'. I don't get it.

Read Page 23: Back to me hideout.
(Only during The Hungering Deep event)

Back to me hideout, where I do me best writin'. Must admit, I didn't like making the swim, knowing what's out there.
Thankfully, it seems to stay near that infernal ridge.
I don't know how to get my revenge on that spiteful shark. Maybe I'll go back to the grog.
I stole animals from the Merchant Alliance for bait, but that didn't work. I tried me shanty again, but one man cannot call the beast alone.

Read Page 26: Retiring.
(Only during The Hungering Deep event)

If worthy enough souls could learn me shanty... no, it's too dangerous.
I'm stocking up on grog, going to Shark Bait Cove, and retiring me drums.
I'll be there, crafting new drums, just in case someone does prove their worth.

Read 'Un-beard-lievable'
(Only after The Hungering Deep event)

One of the oddest tales I heard from those pirates who went out to avenge me crew, was the story of a bearded stranger with a death wish!
They say he fought and defeated the Hungering One... all on his own! Why? I have no idea.
Seems he took it on man-against-fish, armed only with a sloop and a live chicken on the bowspirit! Some sort of protective ritual?
I hear he was naked too! That was very brave, considering it happily bit off my legs.
They fought for a whole day and night, but our hirsute hero prevailed! I hope he put me figurehead to good use... and sold it to buy some trousers.

Wanda's Journals

Wanda's Journals were a set of journals added during the Cursed Sails event, which detailed Wanda's experience in the creation of cursed cannonballs. While Salty was residing in Crescent Isle, he mentioned a few islands that he and Wanda visited that could provide clues to his circumstances.

(Mermaid's Hideaway, campfire near Five Paces Frank)

Dialogue icon

This journal seems to belong to Wanda.

Read 'It's real!'

Salty was right. I don't believe it, but he was right. That old seadog found a treasure that will make us rich!
A cannon from Captain Flameheart's very own ship, The Burning Blade!
Who know's what power it holds? A weaponsmith DREAMS of finding such a weapon.

Read 'Raising our prize'

This cannon is definitely old, but has strangely withstood the ravages of the waves.
The tricky part is getting it up from the depths. It's heavy and... obstinate.
It has moods. And it does things to us, makes us drunk, or weak...
...or angry.

(Thieves' Haven, east shore shack)

Dialogue icon

This journal seems to belong to Wanda.

Read 'A big idea'

So, we can't sell the cannon as it is. Maybe to a wealthy captain? But it's so predictable and besides, that's just one payoff.
I've had a big idea. I'm a weaponsmith. I can do more with the cannon... unlock its properties... make... something NEW.
Cursed cannonballs! The peak of my art AND a way to make my fortune! Salty too, I suppose.
If I can just manipulate the cursed iron, people will know that Wanda is THE weaponsmith of the Sea of Thieves! Wanda... I hate that name.

Read 'Unlocking the curse'

Mood of cannon changes. Chaotic. Separate each property with... mystic symbols? Tincture of antimony? Magnetism? Sing to it? No.
Test 14: success! One part cursed iron, 7 parts black iron, 1 part rat blood, (illegible). Cannonball made ship drop anchor!
Testing has changed ship. Curse spreading? We keep sinking her, she keeps rising. Repairing herself. Can I make more?
I'm changing too. Cannonballs affecting me. Flesh falling away. Tried protective charm, no use. How can I buy time to keep working?
Test 19: FAILURE. DAMN THIS THING! The iron has a... temper, like Flameheart. Need to test STRONGER mix! Too dangerous... unless I get Salty to do it...

(The Sunken Grove, cave campfire)

Dialogue icon

This journal seems to belong to Wanda.

Read 'BLASTED OUTPOSTS'

Curse the BLASTED OUTPOSTS! The heads of trade won't let us sell our cannonballs!
I suspect it's The Order of Souls' doing. Too dangerous, they say!
ALL MY WORK FOR NOTHING? NO! They will see what dangerous means.
THEY WILL IGNORE ME NO LONGER! THEIR RULES, THEIR CODE, MEAN NOTHING!
Back to the workshop to make one more batch, then IT'S WAR!

Read 'NO MORE WANDA'

NO MORE FLESH, NO MORE MERCY, NO MORE WANDA!
GOT CANNONBALLS. GOT CURSED SHIPS. GOT CREWS. GOT FURY. JUST LIKE FLAMEHEART. I HEAR HIM CALL!
I AM CAPTAIN WARSMITH. I WILL BRING THE OUTPOSTS LOW. I WILL CALL THE COWARDS OUT!
DEATH SAILS TONIGHT! HAIL FLAMEHEART!

Umbra's Journals

Umbra has many journals, some relating to her personal history can be found on Lagoon of Whispers, while her Legends of the Sea Journals are to do with the history of the Sea of Thieves and reward commendations when read; Those journals can be found on various locations across the Sea of Thieves.

Lagoon of Whispers Journals

There are three Journals on Lagoon of Whispers written by Umbra that tell of her story and motivations. These Journals have no Commendations tied to them.

Dialogue icon

There is a journal here, hand-written in a hasty fashion.

I've been captured by pirates... again! Just my luck. I overheard the crew discussing their plans, looks like I'm heading back to the Sea of Thieves. I must embrace the path that destiny has put before me. I'll let these fools navigate the Shroud, then I'll escape once we're safe. Second time I've been caught by pirates and dragged here... perhaps I'm where I'm meant to be.

Dialogue icon

This journal is written in a steady hand, by someone taking their time.

Now that I've set up camp, this place feels more like home. But, if I'm going to stay, I'll need to go and get more supplies. I'll go soon. Listening to my captors' tales of legendary deeds has got me more intrigued. I'd love to document the weird and wonderful people who live here! I should research these legends. But first, I will record the full tale of my arrival. Fortunately, running out of paper is no problem for me...

Dialogue icon

This journal talks about a daring escape.

Notes for my life story: Once through the Devil's Shroud, I waited until the crew had drunk themselves silly in celebration. I escaped the brig by regaling my jailor with one of my most exciting stories. Once he came closer, he was already done for! I snuck onto a rowboat and made it here. As I rowed away, I noticed that the Shroud ate a huge hole in their ship. I doubt I'll see them again.

Legends of the Sea Journals

There are 10 numbered Journals written by Umbra hidden in specific locations related to past Content Updates, chronicling the changes made by those events. These books have Commendations tied to them, rewarding Doubloons upon first reading them.

Find Umbra's book on Devil's Ridge, overlooking the sea. The Journal is on a southern rock formation.

Dialogue icon

This book is about the arrival of The Hungering One... signed by ‘Umbra’.

After asking Merrick himself, deciphering his drunken journals and speaking to pirates who were there, I believe this is it.
This is where they used Merrick’s accidental enchanted Shanty to summon forth the first Megalodon - The Hungering One!
Those pirates avenged poor Merrick’s crew, not to mention his legs. But now all of the ancient, deep sharks have awoken...

Legends of the Sea I

Find Umbra's book on Crescent Isle, where Salty once rested. It is near the southern cave entrance, found in a broken barrel.

Dialogue icon

This book is about the origins of The Warsmith… signed by ‘Umbra’

I met Salty - a genuine skeletal parrot! He was once a man, but was changed when creating Cursed Cannonballs from one of Flameheart’s Cannons.
His partner in alchemy was the weaponsmith, Wanda, who forced him to take the brunt of the curse. But she did not escape unscathed.
Flameheart’s hatred fed her own, until she became the twisted Skeleton Captain, ‘The Warsmith’. She waged a failed war on the Outposts.

Legends of the Sea II

Find Umbra's book on The Devil's Thirst, at a small camp. The Journal is in the turned over ship’s hull, right below an Ammo Chest.

Dialogue icon

This book is about the fate of the Forsaken Shores Alliance... signed by ‘Umbra’.

When Grace Morrow and Stitcher Jim joined their crews to form The Forsaken Alliance, they travelled to places few pirates had seen.
They even reached The Devil’s Roar thanks to the Shroudbreaker, but Stitcher Jim was secretly seeking power for his then-master, the Gold Hoarder.
He betrayed and killed all of them but Captain Morrow, who survived her poisoning but was trapped in the Roar. A dark tale indeed.

Legends of the Sea III

Find Umbra's book on The Crooked Masts, under a beacon's light. On the platform by the Festival of the Damned Beacon atop The Crooked Masts, can only be reached via shooting yourself with the Ship's Cannons.

Dialogue icon

This book is about the Festival of the Damned… signed by ‘Umbra’.

This was no easy spot to reach! During the Festival of the Damned, pirates would light these Beacons with various coloured flames.
How incredible that the Ferryman allowed access to the Flames of Fate, which change to reflect how a pirate dies.
I’d like to learn more about them… but I’m not rushing to the Ferry of the Damned. What if I don’t come back? A chilling prospect.

Legends of the Sea IV

Find Umbra's book on Kraken's Fall, near a camp to the east (South of the large camp) and the remains of a Kraken. Inside a Kraken’s vertebrae close to the NPC camp.

Dialogue icon

This book is about the hunting of Krakens… signed by ‘Umbra’.

The Fogs on the Sea of Thieves are heavy, but were especially bad during a certain year. They seemed to stir up the Krakens and Sharks.
Perhaps those creatures just saw a chance to prey on lost ships, but the tables soon turned as pirates realised something...
Many Krakens and Megalodons eat up valuable loot from the ships they sink. Suddenly, hunting them for goodies became a tempting prospect!

Legends of the Sea V

Find Umbra's book in the Pirate Legend Hideout, safely shelved away.

Dialogue icon

This book is about a man named 'Ramsey' and the Gold Hoarder... signed by 'Umbra'.

It seems that the feared Gold Hoarder, a great Skeleton Lord who amassed great wealth through the Gold Hoarders Company, was recently defeated.
Many pirates travelled far and braved terrible traps, Skeleton Lords and more to rebuild the Shroudbreaker and reach his island.
The Hoarder was once a man, until his greed took over. His friend Ramsey was forced to turn his back on him. Could Ramsey in fact be...?

Legends of the Sea VI

Find Umbra's book on Hidden Spring Keep, overlooking the fort. Atop the southern climbable watchtower.

Dialogue icon

This book is about Duke selling gunpowder to the Trading Companies… signed by ‘Umbra’.

The skeletons once began hoarding huge amount of Gunpowder, known since as ‘Black Powder Stashes’.
The Trading Companies didn’t like that, so Duke of the Bilge Rats saw a chance to make the seas safer while also making a lot of gold.
It seems this was Duke’s first step towards acquiring the connections and capital needed to launch the Black Market.

Legends of the Sea VII

Find Umbra's book on Shipwreck Bay, tucked away inside a wreck. Inside the Blackwyche’s Captain’s Quarters, below the cornered armchair.

Dialogue icon

This book is about the theft of the Dark Relics… signed by ‘Umbra’.

I have found some strange artefacts, which I believe to be what the Order of Souls calls ‘Dark Relics’.
Many of these arcane objects were stolen from them in an organised effort by the Skeletons, though Duke was able to retrieve many.
The Dark Relics were later used for terrible deeds, opening windows to other worlds and dispelling powerful curses!

Legends of the Sea VIII

Find Umbra's book at The Wild Treasures Store, a Seapost out in The Wilds. The journal is under the hammock.

Dialogue icon

This book is about Duke’s business and the arrival of the Emporium… signed by ‘Umbra’

I’ve come across strange activity by Duke. It seems he got much of his Black Market stock from these accursed Reaper’s Chests.
The things he couldn’t use - piles of bones, mostly - he sold on as Rag and Bone Crates. Strange what people will do to make their way.
These Pirate Emporium folks, for example. Once Gold Hoarders, now working for some outsider. But such delightful pets they sell!

Legends of the Sea IX

Find Umbra's book in the Fort of the Damned, discussing the supernatural. On the western climbable watchtower by the Fortress structure.

Dialogue icon

This book is about the appearance of the Fort of the Damned... signed by 'Umbra'.

Stitcher Jim believes that the appearance of the Fort of the Damned is the result of a ritual using the stolen Dark Relics.
Pirates have found that the coloured Flames of Fate can be used to 'wave' the twisted Fort and repel the skeletons seeking to use it.
But what's really going on? Such determination to get into our world... but are we stopping them or helping them by waking the Fort?!

Legends of the Sea X

Shanty Journals

These books are also found in preset locations randomly. They contain a song. It hasn't been confirmed that all the songs are connected to playable shanties

Lyrics

Our ship, she dreams
Of wind in her sails,
Of wind in her sails unfurled.
And shining as we cross the sea,
We cross the sea for home.
Then we’ll all raise our voices,
A song in our hearts.
And set our eyes on distant shores
With wind in her sails again.
There’ll be
Cheering & calling,
No more
Squabbling & brawling
When we have the
Wind in our sails.
When we have our
feet on the ground,
We’ll sow our good
Fortune around.
There’ll be
Feasting & pleasure,
No more
Rationing & measure...
When we have the wind in our sails.

Lyrics

Bosun Bill was known throughout the port,
a truly dreadful pirate who was always getting caught,
not one scheme for stealing he could hatch
cause someone would spot the treasure he'd got and Bill they'd snatch!
one day bill awoke laying on a distant beach
the last of his grog was just out of reach.
he groped around with trembling hands
and struck something in the sand!
he'd stumbled upon a part
of an ancient chart
strained and torn, the old map told
the way to find a stash of buried gold,
so...
Bosun Bill set out to find a crew,
but everyone he asked replied, "I'll never sail with you!"
'til at last, he plied a man with ale
to lend him his craft, a rickety raft, then bill set sail!
all by himself, Bill trembled in the dark
he lost both his boots and his hat to a shark.
he followed the chart 'til at last he saw
the gleam of a far off shore!
the trail led into a cave
silent as the gave
Bill stood gaping at what he saw...
a hoard of treasure piled from roof to floor!
Bosun Bill stuffed treasure into his sack
he loaded up the boat, but heard a mighty crack.
he'd taken too much plunder when he should have kept it light
the raft and all the gold sank out of sight!
Bosun Bill let out a terrible curse.
he'd had a chance at glory but he'd only come out worse!
to this day hes trapped on the island still.
not very clever, worst pirate ever, its Boooo... sun... Bill!

Lyrics

Theres a tale of old the sea dogs told bout a fearsome old marauder
He was such a brute he’d take all your loot then he’d sail off with your daughter
Who’s this loathesome rat you say? Who sailed the seven seas
He’d take on all the merchant ships and bring them to their knees
Grog mayles, grog mayles, black hearted to the core
Grog mayles, grog mayles! The gold he did adore
With a hand on the wheel and the other on his sword
You'd get strung up if you glanced at his hoard
Yes he was properly 'ard as nails
And they called him grog mayles
Now I get the feelin you’re not hearin how frightnin he would be
He could skin your chest right through your vest while he cutlassed off your knees
He’d plow his ship through storms and seas no other pirate dared
He plundered all the lubbers loot no treasure chest was spared
Grog mayles, grog mayles black hearted to the core
Grog mayles, grog mayles! Pirate provocateour!
Now is he dead? Cause we’re not sure
I thought I saw him at the tavern next door
Yes he is rather fond of ale… and they call him grogery mayles

Lyrics

Beyond the ocean, rocks and mist, lies a secret none can tell. Filled with booty, grog and reminisce, its my crews true place to dwell.
Oh where will I find a haven safe to stash my hoard? Hush now, you sea urchin! Just take it to the Lord!
He waits amongst a pile of gold. He wants them chests, unearthed, found and stole.
Just give em' up and then you'll see...Pirate Legend, maketh thee. Now set sail for destiny! Oh hail, the Pirate Lord!
Beyond horizon, reefs and port. Be a place that none can see. Stocked with parchment, grog, and long lost maps. It be filled with mystery.
Oh how will I make my ship a legend that's adored. Hush now you land lubber! You haves to please the Lord!
He waits amongst a pile of gold. Tell him, the things, to your crew never told.
Just serve him and then you'll see...Pirate Legend maketh thee. Now angle those sails for destiny! Oh hail, the Pirate Lord!

Lyrics

I was a lucky sailor
as free as a tropical breeze.
But your love clapped me in irons,
and I can't reach the keys!
Now my heart is in your brig,
and I know its not the only lodger.
But since you cast away your love,
I'm no longer a Jolly Rodger.
I'd keep an even keel,
but it's a dirty deal!
There's no appeal!
And now I must walk this plank of love!
Darling, please be mine.
Only you can make me whole.
Your love is the lime.
For the scurvy in my soul.
I used to dream of sunken treasure,
But now my only wish is...
With you tonight,
Instead of sleeping with the fishes.

Dialogue icon

Lyrics

Searchin' for loot wi' the crew one day,
Through me eyeglass somethin' glinted.
Found a treasure chest - the very best.
We knew it would make us minted.
'Coins of gold were ours to share.
But me I wanted more. Stole from me crew - just and extra few.
They knocked me to the floor.
'The brig. The brig.
Lock 'im up they said.
The brig, the brig.
Left me there for dead.
'Headin' back to port with our plunder
We was boarded by a rival.
Twas Three Sheets Neate - a dirty cheat.
We fought for our survival.
'Our crew was brave apart from me.
I hid on the balcony smokin'.
They weren't best pleased - me arms were seized.
Yer for it we ain't jokin'.
With this tale of the rubbish sailor.
