The Compass is one types of Items which can be found or bought in Sea of Thieves. The Compass allows the player to determine the direction they are facing.
The Compass can also be used to count "paces", which some Maps require. While holding a Compass, a player can hold the "use" key/button (PC: left-click) and walk forward, which produces slow, clear bobbing footsteps that can be counted easily to determine pace distance.

The Compass can be used by pressing the right trigger or mouse button. Note that your movement will be slower while you're using it. Additionally, you'll be able to measure paces for figuring out maps, riddles and puzzles.
When treasure hunting via X marks the spot type maps, it can sometimes help to use landmark objects that are directly North/South/East/West of the X, then pull out your compass, face the appropriate direction, swap to the shovel and start digging up a line.
