Shanties are pieces of music, often playable using the various equippable instruments.

There are also a number of notable musical pieces that are not playable by the player.

Mechanics[]

Players may play any random playable Shanty using the instrument of their choice.

To select a specific Shanty, equip the intrument of choice and press Keyboard White Mouse Right /360 LT or open the Equipment Radial Menu, then navigate to the Shanties list by pressing R /360 B.

After selecting a Shanty, the first player to begin playing an instrument will become the lead and begin to play the main melody of the chosen shanty. After this, any player who uses their instrument will join the shanty as a backing instrument, while playing the song with noticeably less notes, no matter which shanty is selected.

Various player states change how the shanty is heard, this includes being under the effects of Grog, which will result in the shanties playing out of tune. Other states that alter the shanty include being underwater, or being in the Ferry of the Damned.

Players can play shanties to charm and pacify Snakes to avoid being poisoned while exploring or while capturing and transporting them in Snake Baskets.

Playable Shanties[]

A list of playable shanties is as follows:

Becalmed[]

Becalmed Lyrics

Our ship, she dreams
Of wind in her sails,
Of wind in her sails unfurled.
And shining as we cross the sea,
we cross the sea for home.

Then we’ll all raise our voices,
a song in our hearts.

And set our eyes on distant shores
with wind in her sails again.

There’ll be cheering & calling.
No more squabbling & brawling.
When we have the wind in our sails.

When we have our feet on the ground.
We’ll sow our good fortune around.

There’ll be feasting & pleasure.
No more rationing & measure.
When we have the wind in our sails.

Bosun Bill[]

Bosun Bill Lyrics

Bosun Bill was known throughout the port
A truly dreadful pirate who was always getting caught
Not one scheme for stealing he could hatch
'Cause someone would spot
the treasure he'd got
And Bill they'd snatch!

One day Bill awoke laying on a distant beach
The last of his grog was just out of reach.
He groped around with trembling hands
And struck something in the sand!

He'd stumbled upon a part
Of an ancient chart
Stained and torn, the old map told
The way to find a stash of buried gold, so...

Bosun Bill set out to find a crew
But everyone he asked replied, "I'll never sail with you!"
'Til at last, he plied a man with ale
to lend him his craft,
A rickety raft
Then bill set sail!

All by himself, Bill trembled in the dark
He lost both his boots and his hat to a shark.
He followed the chart 'til at last he saw
The gleam of a far off shore.
The trail led into a cave
Silent as the grave
Bill stood gaping at what he saw
A hoard of treasure piled from roof to floor.

Bosun Bill stuffed treasure into his sack
he loaded up the boat, but heard a mighty crack.
He'd taken too much plunder when he should have kept it light
The raft and all the gold sank out of sight.

Bosun Bill let out a terrible curse
He'd had a chance at glory but he'd only come out worse!
To this day, he's trapped on the island still
Not very clever,
Worst pirate ever,
it's Booo... Sun... Bill!

Grogg Mayles[]

Grogg Mayles Lyrics

There's a tale of old the sea dogs told 'bout the most fearsome marauder. He was such a brute he’d take all your loot, then he’d sail off with your daughter.

Who’s this loathsome rat ye say who sailed the seven seas. He’d take on all the merchant ships and bring 'em to their knees.

Grogg Mayles! Grogg Mayles!
Black hearted to the core
Grogg Mayles! Grogg Mayles!
The gold he did adore.

With a hand on the wheel and the other on his sword.
You'd get strung you up if you glanced at his hoard.
Yes he was properly 'ard as nails and they called him Grogg Mayles.

Now I get the feelin you’re not hearing how frightening he would be. He could skin your chest right through your vest while he cutlassed off your knees

He’d plow his ship through storms and seas no other pirate dared.
He'd plunder all the lubber's loot no treasure chest was spared.

Grogg Mayles! Grogg Mayles!
Black hearted to the core
Grogg Mayles! Grogg Mayles!
Pirate provocateur!

Now is he dead cos we’re not sure.
I thought I saw him at the tavern next door.
Yes he is rather fond of ale and they call him Grogory Mayles.

We Shall Sail Together Lyrics

Cloaked in folds of midnight waters
Side by side, we sons and daughters
We set forth for no king's orders
But we'll sail together.

Hold fast! Tides are turning
Flames roar, fires are burning
We'll all be returning, if we sail together.

All on the waves shall know our story,
Sing of the battles fought ashore
We all shall thrive on fame and glory
When we sail together.

Words of warning have been spoken
Ancient creatures have awoken
Still, until our bond is broken
We shall sail together.

Who Shall Not Be Returning[]

Who Shall Not Be Returning was released in The Seabound Soul (Content Update), and it was the main soundtrack of the content update and Tall Tale. This song was sung by Chloe Kwok, audio intern at Rare. This shanty was included as a playable shanty in-game in the Haunted Shores update.

Alternate Lyrics (From The Sunken Pearl)

In the depths, she is sleeping
And the darkness creeping
Who shall remember, weeping?
Bound in chain forever...

From shadows concealing
Shines truth now revealing
Who shall begin the healing?
Wounded for forever...

Her heart now is taken
By the lost and forsaken
Who never shall awaken?
Dreaming all forever…

A song filled with grieving
Through the wild waves weaving
Who shall not now be leaving?
Sealed away forever…

The Devil's Roar, a land left unexplored.
The Devil's Roar, the omen the ignored.
And those who land, upon her shore.
Best write to those, who they adore.
Just ask, the souls who came before.

Those poor, forgotten sailors.

In 2022, the The Herald of the Flame Cinematic Trailer[4] presented an alternate version of the shanty with new lyrics, sung again by Stitcher Jim.

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me
We extort and pilfer, we filch and sack
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho
Maraud and embezzle and even highjack
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me
We kindle and char and enflame and ignite
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho
We burn up the city, we're really a fright
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho

We're rascals and scoundrels, we're villains and knaves
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho
We're devils and black sheep, we're really bad eggs
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me
We're beggars and blighters and ne'er do-well cads

Ballad of the Mer Lyrics

Don't linger in the waters
Where the merfolk are at play
The ocean's sons and daughters
Will lead our kind astray

Though many is a sailor
Who has found themselves on land
After meeting with the strange mer
That they could not understand

It seems they care for no reward
For tender ministration
When we have toppled overboard
In our inebriation

But if it's you they've chosen
They'll surround you with their kin
Your legs are bound and frozen
In a wrap of silver skin

Soon you'll be understanding
All that passes from their tongues
No food you'll be demanding
Nor fresh air to fill your lungs

And they'll take you as their brother
Or their sister as they please
And you'll be just another
Of the merfolk in the seas

The choice is yours whatever captain you may be,

Dialogue icon

Hoist the Colours Lyrics (as heard in game)

The king and his men
stole the queen from her bed
and bound her in her bones
The seas be ours
and by the powers
Where we will, we'll roam.

Yo ho, all together
Hoist the colours high
Heave ho, thieves and beggars
Never shall we die

Lyrics

It's a Rare shanty, a song from me,
for all upon the Sea of Thieves.
Of distant lands, and adventures grand-
Draw near, cause here, are tales you won't believe.

A jungle explorer went in search of gold,
cursed by a wolf or so the stories told.
Jigsaws hunted by a bear and bird,
save them from a witch, well, that's what I heard.

It's a Rare shanty, to mark a jubilee,
we'll head out on a treasure hunt to sail across the seas.
Jewels that gleam like a wildest dream, so pass, a glass, and listen to the rest.

On this throne sits a king of all the land,
piles of coins and a tankard in his hand.
Hehehah, ahh that's a lovely tune that is. I wonder who wrote it?
I don't know, do you know? I don't know.

There's ancient relics, magic keys, bananas, and a secret cheese.
A legendary pirate hoard, ooh there's too much to count it all.
It's a Rare shanty for a family, for pirates that are old and new.
We've had laugh and cheers in the thirty five years-
Be free, at sea, and join our Rare Shanty-

It had to be you
It had to be you
I wandered around, and finally found, the somebody who
Could make me be true
Could make me be blue
And even be glad, just to be sad, thinking of you

Some others I've seen
Might never be mean
Might never be cross, try to be boss, but they wouldn't do

For nobody else gave me a thrill, with all of your faults I love you still
It had to be you, wonderful you, it had to be you!

It had to be you, wonderful you, it had to be you
It had to be yooooooou

Oh Hail, the Pirate Lord[]

Oh Hail, the Pirate Lord can be read from a Journal found on islands.

Dialogue icon

Oh Hail, the Pirate Lord Lyrics

Beyond the ocean, rocks and mist, lies a secret none can tell. Filled with booty, grog and reminisce, its my crews true place to dwell.
Oh where will I find a haven safe to stash my hoard? Hush now, you sea urchin! Just take it to the Lord!
He waits amongst a pile of gold. He wants them chests, unearthed, found and stole.
Just give em' up and then you'll see...Pirate Legend, maketh thee. Now set sail for destiny! Oh hail, the Pirate Lord!
Beyond horizon, reefs and port. Be a place that none can see. Stocked with parchment, grog, and long lost maps. It be filled with mystery.
Oh how will I make my ship a legend that's adored. Hush now you land lubber! You haves to please the Lord!
He waits amongst a pile of gold. Tell him, the things, to your crew never told.
Just serve him and then you'll see...Pirate Legend maketh thee. Now angle those sails for destiny! Oh hail, the Pirate Lord!

Deck the Hulls[]

Deck the Hulls Lyrics

Deck the hulls with boughs of holly,
fa la la la la, la la la la

Sea of Thieves just keeps expanding,
adding more adventures for your crew.
Every month, new updates landing,
bringing ways to play and things to do.
Settle back and fill your tankard,
raise a glass to days of yore.
Make sure that you're firmly anchored,
here's a taste of all that's gone before!

First into the fray came Merrick
with a special drum we could equip.
Only to get all hysteric
when it caused the Meg to eat our ship.

Next we went in search of Wanda
and her army from the deep.
Blew her to the wild blue yonder
with the cannonballs we got to keep.

The Forsaken Shores Alliance
sailed out to find The Devil's Roar.
Morrow's act of proud defiance
brought a whole new region to explore!
Red-hot geysers,
streams of lava,
catch a Rowboat for your ride!
If it's all the same I'd rather
run into a nearby cave and hide.

We saw flames while out patrolling,
every fire burned with ghostly light.
Then the fog began to roll in,
helping us to keep well out of sight.

Duke created monthly missions,
just one chance to join the fun.
Everyone knew our positions
when we tried a deadly Reaper's Run!
The Arena crowned its winners,
those who captured silver for their haul.
We fished up delicious dinners
trading with the hungry Hunter's Call.

Then we went in search of glory,
to the fabled Shores of Gold.
Carving out an epic story
in the Tallest Tales ever told!

We recovered powder stashes
and a bunch of stolen relics too.
Spending coins from ancient caches,
bringing home a pet to join our crew!

Now we brave the wintry weather,
arm in arm, hearts filled with cheer.
Join us as we sail together.
We've got plenty more in store next year!

Call of the Bells Lyrics

Hark at the bells hear what they tell
Calling to say ships on their way
Danger is near pirates are here
Soon to attack no turning back
Pistol and sword readied aboard
Hear how they sing of plundering
Then lanterns light blinding and bright
Now cannons flare filling the air
Oh, how they pound striking the ground
Crews reach the land weapons in hand
Caught in the brawl the people fall
Framed by the fire flames soaring higher
All around the smoke and sounds of fighting
And the powder barrels are igniting
Choked in their smell
On tolls the bell
Ding dong, ding dong

Those of us who can take up position
We will never cower in submission
Let the bells ring more they will bring
With every peal never to kneel

We built a home made it our own
Ours to uphold we must be bold
If this should be our elegy
We shall die well so says the bell
Raising our swords we raise towards them
Blades in the darkness, oh, how they spark
If this is the day our world is ended
All who sail shall know it was defended

Hark at the bells
Hear what they tell
Our final stand on Golden Sand
On pirates roam to every home
Ding dong, ding dong
